How long and detailed should my AI agent's prompt be?
Keep it as short and clear as possible. With AI, less is more, and a bigger prompt does not give better results.
Give the agent its goal, tell it what to do and how to do it, and tag the tools it should use with the @ symbol (for example @Book service). Start with a sentence like: The goal is to, and then say what to do when a customer responds. Below the goal, add the FAQs, for example how long a roof inspection takes and whether there is any cost.
You are the one who maintains the prompt. If a ten page prompt says something you do not want, you have to read all of it to find what to change. Long prompts also make conflicting instructions more likely: if one line gives a plan one price and another line gives a different price, the AI picks one and may answer differently each time. People who have ChatGPT write a long prompt often update one part and miss an opposite instruction further down. The more information in the prompt, the more confusing it can get for the agent. It is fine to use ChatGPT or another AI to plan ideas, but do not have it write a huge system prompt.
Also remove tools the agent does not need. If tools such as add a tag or add a note are turned on, the agent may try to use them at random, which adds delay.
When creating an agent, you can choose Start with a website and give it the business's site, which makes building the agent easier.
